Meta ads playbook for FiftyStrong

What X and YouTube operators say works in 2026, and how our account compares

date2026-10-21sources20 YouTube videos · about 100 X searches · our Meta, PostHog and Stripe data

Our ads already win the click: link CTR is 3.3%, and app operators call 1.5% "great". The money is lost after the click and in the signal we send Meta. Since Oct 1, 0 of 25 people who opened checkout paid, and Meta has never received one real web purchase. Fix the signal first. Then prove the new coupon paywall with two weeks of steady spend. Then build a weekly creative test.

Verdict

Three things break our economics, and only one of them is the ads
  1. After the click. 0 of 25 checkout openers paid since Oct 1. Operators see 40–65%. The coupon paywall that went live today is the fix to prove.
  2. The signal to Meta. A trial start sends "Purchase" at the full renewal price. No real web purchase has reached Meta in 4 weeks. So every purchase campaign ran blind, at 3.8 times the CPM of our lead campaigns.
  3. How we spend. We spend in $200 bursts, and change settings mid-run. We put 13 ads in one ad set on $50–80 a day. No ad set ever left learning, and most ads never got a fair read.
Ad: CTR 3.3%, goodQuiz screen 1: 62–76%leavePaywall: 24% of landersCheckout: 0 of 25 paidMeta: 0 real purchasesseen

Lifetime: $1,780 spent since Aug 7, 6 sales, $79 collected. The purchase campaigns cost $152 per sale. Under the coupon paywall, a customer is worth about $25–42 in her first 12 weeks. So we need a cost per sale near $40 to break even, and near $28 to pay back 1.5 times.

1. Benchmarks and our gap

Ours is the Oct 14–18 run unless the row says otherwise. "Lander" is a person who loads the quiz from an ad.

Metric Ours What others report Target for us Status
CPM $62 (US $95; purchase goal lifetime $91) web2app "over $20"; new account and pixel $80–120 ≤ $35 1.8× over
Link CTR 3.3% apps: over 1% good, 1.5% great ≥ 2.5%
Hook rate (3-second views ÷ impressions) 34% 25% floor, 30% norm, 40% elite ≥ 30%
Cost per link click $1.86 depends on CPM ≤ $0.90 2× over
Lander answers question 1 24% (run), 38% (Oct 1–17) BetterMe average about 50% (statics 30%, UGC video 70%) ≥ 50%
Lander finishes the quiz 14% (run), 24% (Oct 1–17) FunnelFox: 13% of sessions reach the paywall ≥ 25%
Lander opens checkout 6.2% 25–45% of paywall viewers (web2app.tools) ≥ 8%
Checkout opened → paid 0% (0 of 25 since Oct 1) 40–65% with Apple Pay and Google Pay ≥ 35%
Lander → paid 0% (purchase goal lifetime 1.6%) web2app 2–3%; FunnelFox 3% ≥ 2.5%
Cost per sale $152 (purchase goal lifetime) menopause DTC $100–200; Fuelin $50–60 ≤ $40, then ≤ $28 4–5× over
Real purchases Meta sees a week 0 about 50 to leave learning ≥ 10

What each fix does to our cost per sale. Cost per sale = cost per click ÷ (lander-to-checkout rate × checkout-to-paid rate). The rows below are illustrative. They assume the screen-1 fix (from 38% to 50% answering question 1) lifts every later step by the same factor.

Step Cost per click Lander → checkout Checkout → paid Cost per sale
Today $1.86 6.2% 0% sale
The paywall closes 35% $1.86 6.2% 35% $86
Quiz screen 1 keeps half of landers $1.86 8.5% 35% $63
CPM falls to about $40 $1.20 8.5% 35% $40
CPM falls to about $30 $0.90 8.5% 35% $30

The paywall is worth the most, and it shipped today. CPM is the hardest gap. Our lead campaigns bought impressions at $24–30, so a $30–40 CPM is reachable once Meta has real purchases to learn from.

2. Strategy: bidding, events, setup, placements, audience

Our account against the playbook

Item What we do What the playbook says Status
Bidding Lowest cost, no caps Lowest cost under about $10k a month; caps later
Optimisation event Purchase, but trial starts count as Purchase at full price The deepest event, sent honestly
Signal hygiene Staging fires the production pixel; automatic advanced matching is off Clean pixel plus server events, match quality ≥ 6
Campaign type Manual sales campaign Manual or Advantage+; no app data either way
Ads per ad set 13 ads on $50–80 a day 3–5 at small budgets
Delivery $200 bursts, edits mid-run Steady spend, no edits for 3–7 days
Age Women 45–64 since Oct 18; 65+ took 26–33% of spend before Broad, and let the creative pick
Countries 14, including non-English EU One market, or one English-speaking bundle
Placements All, including Audience Network; every asset 9:16 Audience Network off; a 4:5 version for feed
Copy One headline, description and CTA on all 62 ads Copy that matches each ad's hook
AI enhancements All 83 off Off
Landing match Generic quiz screen 1; 62–76% leave Screen 1 repeats the ad's hook

Bidding: lowest cost (highest volume), no caps. Every small-budget voice agrees (@stacy_siz, @Peter_Quadrel, Marcus Burke). Add a cost cap only after about 50 purchases and a stable cost per sale. Marcus Burke starts caps at 4–5 times the historic cost and lowers them step by step.

Optimisation event: Purchase, but only when money moves, at the amount charged. The common advice for small budgets is to step down to a cheaper event such as Lead. Our own history says no. Lead goals spent $869 for 56 checkouts and 0 sales. Purchase goals spent $911 for 23 checkouts and 6 sales.

The coupon paywall charges on day one, so Purchase is now the honest event closest to revenue. If we see fewer than 5 purchases a week after two weeks, step down to InitiateCheckout. Never step down to Lead.

Fix the signal before we spend again:

  1. Send Purchase only on a real charge, at the charged amount and currency. Today a $1.99 week start reports a $34.99 Purchase. One account cut its cost per trial by about 35% when it stopped sending trials as purchases.
  2. Stop staging and localhost from firing the production pixel.
  3. Turn on automatic advanced matching. Read event match quality in Events Manager, and aim for 6 or more.

Another session has uncommitted work on a delayed "qualified trial" Purchase. Merge with it. Do not build a second version.

Campaign and asset setup

  • Keep one manual sales campaign. Neither X nor YouTube had app data that favours Advantage+ sales campaigns.
  • Keep Advantage+ placements, but block Audience Network in the account-level placement controls. In small founders' tests it gave 84–89% of clicks, and most were junk.
  • Give every asset a 4:5 version for feed and a 9:16 version for Reels and Stories. Use placement asset customisation.
  • Keep all AI creative enhancements off. Before Oct 28, turn off "product browsing", which Meta switches on by default. Also turn off creative-feature tests and the AI landing-page test.

Placements: build for Facebook feed. Several operators say Facebook feed is the older placement, and that older people click more. Facebook feed took 48% of our purchase spend, at a CTR of 3.0%, against 5.1% on Facebook Reels. Every asset was 9:16, so feed cropped the hook text. Wall-of-text statics and long videos win there for fitness apps aimed at older people (Nathan Hudson, Marcus Burke).

Audience: broad. Target women 45–64, with no interests and no lookalikes. Let the creative call out the persona. Upload buyers as an exclusion.

Use five English-speaking markets: US, CA, GB, AU and IE. Local prices are live for GB, CA and AU, and IE pays in euros. Leave New Zealand, the other euro countries and the Nordics for a later, separate test.

3. Creatives, copy and the CTA button

Formats that win for women 45+, against what we already have

Format Why it works Source Ours so far
Wall-of-text static on a solid colour, like a Facebook group post Feed skews older; text-only statics have the best hit rate (11.6%) Nathan Hudson; Motion 2026 Floor rise and Stairs: cheapest leads ($2.52), CTR 4–8%
First-person UGC with words on screen, 5–10 seconds Native, fast, high hold Fuelin; Shamanth Rao Jog selfie hook 51%; Abs mirror 38%

Hooks

  • Use a root-cause reframe in her words: "I thought it was my age. It was my muscles." Take the words from the Reddit corpus and from reviews.
  • Call out the persona in the first line, in the third person: "for women over 50 who haven't exercised in years".
  • Our long cuts lose people early. Average watch is 4–8 seconds of 21–37. Put the promise and the quiz ask in the first 5 seconds.

Copy

  • Primary text: write one per ad, to match that ad's hook. Today 54 of 62 ads share one text. Open with a line of 14 words or fewer that repeats the hook. Add 3–5 short lines in her words. End with "Take the 2-minute quiz."
  • More text options: add 2–3 primary texts and 2–3 headlines to each ad. This is the cheapest copy test we have never run.
  • Headline: keep it to 40 characters or fewer, and make it match quiz screen 1. Candidates: "Strength plan for women over 50", "12 weeks. At home. No equipment.", "Your 2-minute strength quiz".
  • Description: keep "At home · No equipment · Built for women over 50". Few placements show it.
  • CTA button: keep "Learn more" on cold ads. Sabri Suby and several agencies agree, and nobody posted a test that beat it. Do not spend tests on the button.
  • Landing match: quiz screen 1 must repeat the ad's hook. Our biggest leak by volume is that screen, where 62–76% leave.
Guardrails
  • No fake testimonials. Roxie can coach. She must not appear as a customer with results; the FTC's 2024 rule on fake reviews covers AI-made ones.
  • No "Are you over 50?". Meta's personal-attributes policy bans it. "For women over 50" and "I'm 55" are fine.
  • No weight-loss before/after pairs. Functional pairs are fine.
  • No "menopause belly" in new copy. The Abs mirror ad is the one exception you chose.

4. Budgets and how to set up tests

Meta sets budgets on the campaign (CBO) or on the ad set (ABO), never on one ad. To control one ad, pause it with a rule.

Phase When Budget a day Campaigns Ad sets Ads Goal
0. Fix this week $0 – – – Clean signal, settings, 4:5 crops, new copy
1. Prove the paywall days 1–14 $50 1 1 5 known ads Read the close rate at 25 checkouts
2. Creative test after phase 1 passes $80–100 1 2: Core 70%, Test 30% Core 3–5; Test 3–4 new a week One winner a month
3. Scale cost per sale ≤ $40, 5+ sales a week +20% every 3–4 days 1 2–3 as phase 2 More sales at the same cost

Phase 1 costs about $700. That fits the $741 left under the $1,000 spend cap.

Phase 1 ads: Beginner friendly, Chair, Floor rise and Stairs, with the old "Saturday 17 October" date removed, plus one new wall-of-text static. Use women 45–64, the five English-speaking markets, and Purchase as the event. Make no edits for 7 days. In this phase let Meta split the money, because the paywall is the question, not the creative.

Phase 2 structure

about 1,000 impressions eachtop half, about $60 eachwinner moves by post IDSales campaignCore ad setTest ad setFilter roundRead round
  • Use ABO (ad-set budgets) while testing. Each ad set then gets its own money, so the test always spends. Inside one ad set, Meta gave 3 ads 59% of the October spend, and 7 ads got under $15 each.
  • Adapt Marco's seed rule. Pausing each ad at 2,000–3,000 impressions filters out losers. It does not prove winners: "3k impressions tells you what's bad, never what's good" (@adriamatz). At our CPM, 2,500 impressions cost about $150 per ad. Use about 1,000 impressions (Sergio C's minimum) for the filter, then a read round on the survivors.
  • Move a winner by post ID. It keeps its likes and comments in the Core ad set.

5. When to add budget and when to kill

Stage Kill when Promote or scale when
Test ad, filter round (about 1,000 impressions) Hook rate under 25%, or link CTR under 1.5%, or CPM over 1.5× the ad-set average Hook rate 30% or more and link CTR 2.5% or more
Test ad, read round (about $60, about 40 landers) 0 leads after $30, or a lead rate under 15%, or cost per lead over $10 Cost per lead $6 or less and at least 1 checkout
Core ad $120 spent (3× the $40 target) with 0 sales and cost per checkout over $30; or fatigue (CPM up 20%, CTR down 15%, frequency over 2.5) Leave it alone while the ad set hits target, even if one ad looks expensive
Account, weekly After 25 checkouts: 0 sales, or cost per sale over $70. The problem is after the click. Pause ads and fix the funnel Cost per sale $40 or less with 5+ sales in 7 days: raise budget 20%, then wait 3–4 days
  • Phase 1 read at 25 checkouts: 7 or more sales means go to phase 2. 3–6 sales means run on to 50 checkouts. 0–2 sales means stop and fix the paywall.
  • Decide sales per account, not per ad. At $50–100 a day, no single ad gets enough sales to judge. Judge ads on the earlier steps, and judge the account on sales. Cal AI's COO: "$50/day on Meta tells you almost nothing" about cost per sale.
  • Change things at most every 3–4 days. Never change audience, countries or budget in the middle of a read. Each edit restarts learning.
  • Raise budget in small steps. Hold each step for days, not hours. Examples: +20% every 3 days (@nicktheriot_), €50 steps held 1–3 weeks (BPM dating app).

6. How to find our winning formats

  1. Mine the Ad Library every week. Check BetterMe (its chair yoga, wall Pilates and 40+ funnels), Reverse Health, JustFit, ChillFit, Lasta, Joi, and the menopause brands. Keep ads that are active for 60 days or more, or that run the same creative in many ads. Save them in .claude/competitor-teardown/.
  2. Tag each one by persona, angle and format. Borrow the format. Write the message from her own words: the Reddit corpus, reviews and support mail. Copied messages do not scale, because bigger buyers outbid the same creative (Nathan Hudson).
  3. Start from the angle data we already have. In 279 organic videos, chair or no equipment, minutes, and belly beat strength and identity 4 times per video. Belly is the door, and identity is the room.
  4. Launch 3–4 new cells a week that differ in persona or format. Meta groups similar ads under one Entity ID. So a new hook on the same video counts as the same ad.
  5. When one wins, iterate it. Make 80% of new ads variations of the winner. Use new hooks on the same body, 4:5 and 9:16 cuts, and persona word swaps. Make 20% new.
  6. Track hit rate and cost per winner. Expect 5–8% of ads to win (Motion), so about 1 winner per 15–20 ads tested.

First four test cells for phase 2

Persona Format Hook, in her words
Restarter: hasn't exercised in years Wall-of-text static, Facebook group look "I'm 58 and I hadn't worked out since my kids were small."
Body changed after 50 UGC video with words on screen "I'm the same weight I was at 45. Completely different body."
Stiff joints, chair-based Show the plan: week-1 chair moves "10 minutes in a chair. No floor, no gym."
Strength and bones 90-second education video "I thought it was my age. It was my muscles."

Plan for the season. Dec 26 to mid-January has cheap CPMs and resolution demand, so it is the best window of the year for fitness apps. Get the account out of learning, with real purchases, before Dec 26. Have the creatives ready.

7. The next three weeks

  1. Change the server events: send Purchase only on a real charge, at the charged amount. Merge this with the in-progress qualified-trial work.
  2. Stop staging and localhost from firing the production pixel.
  3. Turn on automatic advanced matching in Events Manager. Read event match quality.
  4. In Advertising settings, block Audience Network. Turn off product browsing, creative-feature tests and the AI landing-page test.
  5. Make 4:5 versions of Beginner friendly, Chair, Floor rise and Stairs. Remove the old date. Make one new wall-of-text static.
  6. Write one primary text per ad that matches its hook. Add two headline options per ad.
  7. Build phase 1 as a new ad set in the Purchases campaign. Use women 45–64, the five markets, Purchase, lowest cost, $50 a day and 5 ads.
  8. Run it for 14 days with no edits. Read the result at 25 checkouts.
  9. During phase 1, make the four phase-2 test cells.

8. Where the sources disagree, and our choice

Question One side Other side Our choice
Force equal spend on every ad? Yes: Marco, Sergio C, @adriamatz, Marcus Burke No, trust Meta: Fuelin's consultant, @PhilKiel Force in the Test ad set, trust Meta in Core
Statics or video first? Statics: Sabri Suby, Hannah Parvaz, Adam Lyttle Video: BetterMe, Lorenzo Pravatà Both: statics are cheap feed tests; our best checkout ad is video
Is $50 a day enough? Yes for hooks: @sethocho, @mattdenegri No, $500 a day or $10k a month: Cal AI's COO, Marcus Burke Enough to prove the paywall and filter hooks. Not enough to judge cost per sale per ad
Which event at a small budget? A cheaper proxy (Lead, trial): @stacy_siz, @Peter_Quadrel The deepest event: Marcus Burke, Hannah Parvaz Purchase, because our lead traffic never bought
ABO or CBO? ABO: @stacy_siz, @zakisbuilding CBO: @roshanp, @mattdenegri ABO while testing; review at phase 3
Copy competitors? Yes, it is the best first test: Shamanth Rao, Ben Heath It will not scale: Nathan Hudson Borrow the format, write our own message
